Controls of the sounding points in space-based GPS=LEO meteorology

چکیده
GPS radio occultation technique has been developed resulting from remote sensing applications in planetary atmospheric limb sounding pioneered by JPL and Stanford University in 1960s. Since the launch of the experimental satellite MicroLab1 on April 3 1995, the primary results from this Low Earth orbiter (LEO) satellite demonstrated potential scienti:c values and practical signi:cance of this innovation in GPS meteorology. For MicroLab1, the sounding locations on the Earth’s surface were globally pseudo-randomly distributed, which is good for data assimilation in atmospheric and ionospheric research. As another strategy, as similar to mountain-based or airborne GPS receiver, sequential occultation footprints falling within adjacent regions of some speci:c points on the Earth’s surface are expected in the following possible cases: comparing and cross-calibrating radio occultation data with other techniques, such as ground-based GPS, radiosonde and lindar; continuous monitoring of local atmospheric refractivity :eld and local hazardous weather within a speci:c time period. In this paper, we discuss a possibility to get sequential atmospheric pro:les near a speci:c ground location by optimally designing a LEO satellite orbit. This may have potential bene:ts in the applications of GPS=LEO occultation technique to atmospheric science, improving numerical weather prediction with data assimilation, and the monitoring of hazardous weather and atmospheric refractivity :eld. Such an orbit design of LEO satellite would in?uence future GPS launch plan, and would in?uence the design of new generation of LEO satellite. c © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Application of GPS radio occultation to the assessment of temperature profile retrievals from microwave and infrared sounders
Comparisons of satellite temperature profile products from GPS radio occultation (RO) and hyperspectral infrared (IR)/microwave (MW) sounders are made using a previously developed matchup technique. The profile matchup technique matches GPS RO and IR/MW sounder profiles temporally, within 1 h, and spatially, taking into account the unique RO profile geometry and theoretical spatial resolution b...

The Global Positioning System/Meteorology (GPS/MET) Program was established in 1993 by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) to demonstrate active limb sounding of the Earth's atmosphere using the radio occultation technique. The demonstration system observes occulted GPS satellite signals received by a low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellite, MicroLab1, launched April 3, 1995. ...

Over the past 10 years significant progress has been made in atmospheric sensing with GPS. Both spacebased atmospheric sounding and ground-based measurements of integrated delay due to the troposphere have shown promise for meteorological applications. Now the focus is shifting from developing and validating the sensing technology towards applying it to weather forecasting. This paper will focu...
متن کاملLAGRANGE RO: A GNSS Receiver for Radio Occultation
A GPS Radio Occultation occurs when a transmitting GPS satellite, setting or rising behind the Earth limb, is viewed by a LEO satellite that carries on board a space-qualified GPS receiver. In this way, it is provided a vertical sounding of the atmosphere exploiting the relative motion between the GPS and the LEO satellites. The technique proved to be particularly precise in retrieving temperat...
